Clowns are expected to entertain and to make people laugh, but oddly so they are often thought of as scary. This actually is quite prevalent and this affliction is called coulrophobia, which is the fear of clowns. Types of Clowns

There are Whiteface, Auguste, Tramp/Hobo and Character Clowns.  Of the Whiteface Clowns, there are the European Whiteface, Straight Whiteface and Grotesque Whiteface.

The Auguste clown is about the funniest. The actions are wilder than the other types of clowns. Often makes trouble and uses slapstick comedy. For base makeup color, they use a variation of red, pink or tan instead of white. Their features are exaggerated with the mouth thickly outlined with white, and also the eyes. The costume is either over sized or a bit small and does not fit. Characteristics of these clown Halloween costumes should be large prints, bold colors and suspenders.
